Everything you need to know about King of PopQuiz — from setup to gameplay, buzzers to CarPlay.

🔍
🚀 Getting started

After installing the app, press the Sign Up button. Enter your username and email address. You will receive a one-time password (OTP) code to log in. We do not work with passwords — we want to store as little information about you as possible.

The app will prompt you to log in to your Spotify account on first login. A free Spotify account works fine.

Your playlist must be set to public in Spotify, otherwise the app won't have access. Open the Spotify app, go to the playlist, tap the three dots and scroll down to 'Share'. Tap 'More' at the bottom, scroll right until you see the King of PopQuiz app, and select it — the playlist will be added automatically. In the app, go to Spotify Playlists on the home screen to find it. To play with it: select a game, tap 'Choose playlist', then 'Select from Spotify'.

🎮 Gameplay

Currently the maximum is 12 players per game. This can also be 12 teams, which effectively increases the total number of players significantly.

We have intros, outros and centerpieces — divided into 10, 20 or 30 second clips. The centerpiece is always 30 seconds. The outro is harder than you think 🙂

Press the big white triangle on the album cover to replay the song. Did you like it and want to add it to your Spotify? Press the heart-shaped icon next to the album cover to jump directly to the song in Spotify.

Bonus rounds appear in between the regular "guess the song" rounds. They offer something different — trivia questions, or guessing the artist and title from AI-generated images.

Yes! At home you can AirPlay to a speaker. Bluetooth also works, but only when using the touchscreen buzzer or a maximum of 3 external wireless buzzers — above that there isn't enough Bluetooth bandwidth and audio will crackle. For 4+ wireless buzzers, connect your phone to a speaker via an aux cable instead.

No! You can mirror your phone screen to any smart TV that supports AirPlay/mirroring, so you can play on a large screen. If you have a Mac, you can also install the app on your Mac and cast that screen to your TV.

We know this can happen. Unfortunately it's out of our control — we work with data from Spotify, and sometimes a remaster receives the remaster's release year instead of the original. Sometimes even the original year isn't available on Spotify at all.

🏆 Scoring

You score 1 point per correct answer — artist name, song title and year of release each count as 1 point (max 3 per song). You can agree to allow a 2-year offset for the release year, or play strictly where only the exact year is correct.

Optional: enable the Wrong answer −1 button to penalise wrong answers. The Minimum 2 correct setting prevents players from buzzing in early unless they know at least 2 variables — though in the last 5 seconds, 1 correct answer is enough to score.

If a player buzzes and then doesn't answer, they also get −1 point. Think before you buzz! 🙂

The same scoring as Beat the Clock applies — artist, title and year. The only difference is there's no time penalty; you can take as long as you need.

⚙️ Game settings

King of PopQuiz is the hard version: the liquid glass blur over the song info is so thick you can't see anything. Prince of Pop is easier — the album cover and artist name are hidden, but if you look closely you can make out some details that might help you guess.

With this setting on, a −1 point button appears in the game. Press it when a player gives a wrong answer to deduct a point from their score.

By default the countdown timer keeps running during the reveal and scoring screens. Enable this setting to pause the timer during those in-between moments.

After a player buzzes in, a 15-second countdown starts for them to answer. If time runs out with no answer, −1 point is added automatically. Great for speeding up gameplay.

When the answer timer is running, a warning sound plays when 5 seconds remain. Useful in larger groups where players can't always see the screen.

Prevents players from buzzing early when they only know one thing (e.g. just the artist). While the timer is green, a player must know at least 2 variables to score; knowing only 1 results in −1. As the timer turns yellow → orange → red in the last 5 seconds, buzzing for 1 point becomes allowed again.

This adds bonus rounds in between regular songs. You choose how often (e.g. every 3 songs). For AI image rounds, pick between King of PopQuiz (hard/easy artist images) or Joker (funny AI images only).

Playing with wireless buzzers in a large group? Enable this to have Siri announce the name of the player who buzzed in first — no need to look at the screen.

🔔 Wireless buzzers

Connect the buzzers via Bluetooth as described in the included instructions. Add the players you want to play with, then tap the 'Assign buzzers' button. The app will go through each player one by one and ask them to press their button. When finished, you can start — the app will know which player belongs to which buzzer.

Not recommended. With 4 or more wireless buzzers connected, there isn't enough Bluetooth bandwidth to stream audio without crackling. For larger setups, connect your phone to the speaker via an aux cable.

🚗 Apple CarPlay

Connect your phone to your car's head unit (wired works best). Open the KoPq app before driving and select CarPlay. On your car's screen, choose the game mode, playlist and duration — just like in the regular app. You can then lock your phone and put it away. The game plays automatically: listen, shout the artist and title, and the answer is revealed before moving on to the next song.

Access CarPlay settings from the lock screen via the button in the top right. Options include:

Guess time — how long before song info is revealed (5, 10 or 20 seconds).

Reveal duration — how long the song info stays visible before the next song starts.

Siri announcements — Siri reads out the song info so you can play fully eyes-free while navigating.

Announce year — Siri also mentions the year of release.

Default settings — set a fixed game duration and mode so you don't have to configure it each time.

👤 Account & subscription

We keep it minimal. We only store your email address, Spotify account ID, username and (optionally) your avatar picture. That's why we use a one-time password — no password database needed.

Subscriptions are handled inside the app via Apple Pay or Google Pay — fully secure and managed by Apple / Google.

We offer a free tier with limited gameplay and ads between songs, a monthly subscription, an annual subscription (best value), and a 24-hour pass for one-time access — perfect if you just want to play for an evening.
